Comedy Clinic 7th Anniversary Show - Nov 7 @ Full Moon on Cherry Street - “STILL Your Prescription For Laughs!”
TULSA, Okla - It’s a party and you’re invited when Tulsa’s Comedy Troupe, The Comedy Clinic, takes the stage at Full Moon Cafe on Cherry Street (1525 East 15th St.) November 7, 2009, in a show that will not only showcase their gut busting style of improvisational humor, but will also celebrate their 7th Anniversary. Showtime is 8pm for their latest installment called “STILL Your Prescription For Laughs!”
Ben Beckham, Maria Gus and Jeff Turner, the three original and founding members of The Comedy Clinic, are in their 8th season as the Medics of Madness. These local improv veterans have performed in festivals, private parties and on stage from Drumright to Bartlesville, to Broken Arrow to Enid and back to Tulsa for thousands of satisfied, if not adoring, fans since their debut as The Comedy Clinic in 2002.
The Comedy Clinic will make their first appearance in Tulsa's trendy Cherry Street district (Tulsa's 15th St area between Peoria and Utica) as construction at Brookside's Jewel paved the way for a trip to the Full Moon Cafe where they will be followed by the house act, Dueling Pianos performed by Tom Basler and Kitt Bender.
Full Moon Cafe owner Tony Henry is excited to add a different mix of humor on this anniversary night for The Comedy Clinic.
"We have known (The Comedy Clinic) for a long time. They are really funny and lots of fun to have around and we are happy to have them on this special night," Henry said.
Turner is equally excited.
"It's only right that for our first time on Cherry Street we play at Tony's place (Full Moon Cafe)," said Turner who has always been appreciative of Henry for allowing the group to call his one of his hot spots their home all these years. "We first met Tony way back when we did a show at The Id and he and all his people have always been first class to us."
While The Comedy Clinic has known Henry for some time, they've known each other even longer. Beckham and Turner first met at Tulsa’s Edison High School in 1987 before meeting Gus, a Bartlesville native, in early 2002 at an open audition for a now defunct comedy troupe. The three have been best of friends ever since.
“Even though Jeff’s married (to wife Kerry) and has two kids, he’s still one of my best girlfriends,” said Gus. “(Beckham and Turner) are like my brothers.”
Beckham thinks the group has done so well because, for one, they don’t take themselves too seriously and two, as Turner states, there is a lot of trust between the three of them.
“The moment you think you are big time is the first step towards dying on stage,” Beckham said. “We have fun doing what we are doing and the places where we are privileged to play (on stage).”
Turner added, “The greatest compliment to our troupe is the fact that all three of us are comfortable with any combination on stage. We know we can make it funny whether it is Maria and Ben, Ben and me or Maria and me.”
Dubbed the O-B-G-Y-N of F-U-N-N-Y as a play off their “Clinic” name, these Physicians of Fun have no plans for slowing down as a troupe.
“We’ve been together in good times and bad,” said Gus. “Mostly good, though. Who knows how long we’ll keep going?”
Beckham says as long as people still come to see them, there is no reason to stop now.
“As long as people still want to see us, we’ll keep performing. We travel out of town when they call us and we’ll walk down the street when it’s in town. You call, we’ll answer.”
And what is Turner’s take on the how long The Comedy Clinic legacy will continue?
“Ask me at our 10-year (anniversary),” he said. “I have an 8-year old and an almost 12-year who ask me before every show if they can be in The Comedy Clinic someday. Who knows? The show may go on.”
Everyone knows, the show MUST go on. And it will, November 7th, 2009 at Full Moon Cafe on 15th Street.
Show time is 8pm. Advance tickets are $9 or $10 at the door. Advance tickets must be purchased by Friday, November 6th, 2009. Tickets are available for purchase online, as well, with Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover.
